Next Level Abandon Checkout Strategies

An abandon checkout automation is quite possibly the most valuable asset for your e-commerce store.

Their entire job is to bring back potential customers who started their checkout process but then vanished.

Maybe they got cold feet. Maybe their 3 year old spilled an entire bottle of maple syrup on the kitchen counter and is now running rampant through the house.

Whatever the case, this automation is there to corral people back to checkout.

I recently tweaked an abandon checkout automation for a client that could work really well for other e-commerce stores.

We basically set it up to help move old inventory that they needed to clear out of the warehouse.

So here’s what we did.

We created two Shopify product collections, one for $100 off SKUs and another for $200 off SKUs.

Then I went into Klaviyo and set up a series of emails that would trigger if someone had one of these discount SKU categories in their cart.

Another thing to note is that this client doesn’t do sitewide discounts because of MAP restrictions. So we had to specifically target these products

This was the final result.

That first email has a 4.7% conversion rate which is 2x higher than their catch-all abandon checkout email.

Pretty damn sweet.

It’s also a cool way to do “phantom” sales on your site that are only triggered by someone who is really interested in a product.

If your brand doesn’t really like to do sitewide discounts this would be a sneaky way to move old inventory.

Alright gotta keep it short today. I’ve got a few pizza dough balls that are calling my name.
